Over the last two decades, over half a billion Indians have gained access to electricity increasing the share of grid-electrified households from 43% to almost 100%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even with the progress made, many areas continue to be impacted due to the lack of access to reliable, sustainable and affordable electricity connections. The resulting human and economic costs can be high:\u00a0 health care will remain inadequate, schools will struggle to offer quality education, and agricultural and industrial enterprises will not be competitive. Over 680 million Indian still rely on biomass and are without access to clean cooking facilities.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-size: 1.2em !important;\">A majority of Indian households are now connected to the grid, but supply is still intermittent and unreliable<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 1.2em !important;\">Over 680 million Indians still rely on biomass and are without access to clean cooking facilities<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 1.2em !important;\">Relatively little attention is paid to demand-side user-perspective to close the electricity gap<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Manu Maudgal,\u00a0 Director-Clean Power Programme states that<\/strong> \u201cas India\u2019s development story unfolds, expanding electricity access is critical to achieving sustainable and inclusive development for communities. We urgently need to bring clean, affordable, reliable energy to those who lack it.\u201d \u00a0The solutions on offer have focused on supply-side, technology-centric approaches.
