India’s federal structure means sub-national authorities are expected to play a key role in actively adopting and implementing climate-friendly policies. India has been a first-mover in preparing State Action Plans on Climate Change. States are responsible for implementing the policies and programmes framed by the central government. Also, in light of the wide socio-economic and climate-geographic variations in India, the active involvement of states increases manifold. Cities and communities too are now becoming principal actors on climate action.
The progress of sub-national actions can significantly contribute to meeting India’s national and global climate targets. The webinar looks at opportunities to expand climate action at the state, union territory and gram panchayat levels.
